Letter from the Editor

It all began with laundry.

In spring 2024, I was sitting on a panel in New York City about ambition and motherhood when the moderator asked a question that stopped me in my tracks: “What have you dropped?”

One by one, my fellow panelists shared the things they’d let go of to make room for everything else in their busy lives as working moms. Laundry, it seemed, was a universal sacrifice—they’d all stopped doing their own.

When it was my turn to answer, all I could think about was the two weeks’ worth of laundry sitting on my dining room table back in Chicago, waiting to be sorted, folded, and returned to its proper place. That night, back at my hotel, I stayed up way too late, turning this idea over in my mind: Why isn’t there a space for everyday ambitious moms to come together, share, and support one another?

I’d started a monthly column called Werking Mom as part of my LT in the City Weekly newsletter, hoping to spark real, raw conversations about what it means to be an ambitious mom today. But life got busy, and it only lasted a few months. At the same time, I was brainstorming the direction for the second season of The LT in the City Podcast—I knew I wanted to center Black moms, but I wasn’t sure how.

And then it hit me: What if I combined these two ideas into something bigger? Not just a podcast, but an entire community built for ambitious moms like us.

Like many of you, I’ve often hesitated to proudly wear my mom badge. Even though my husband and I endured several rounds of IVF to have our daughter, I feared that embracing motherhood too openly would mean I wouldn’t be taken seriously in my career. But I’m done shrinking. I’m done downplaying my ambitions—both as a mom and as a career-driven woman.

And I know I’m not alone.

Here at Werking Moms Club, we wear our mom badges proudly. But we’re also proud of who we are outside of motherhood. We have hopes, dreams, ambitions, goals—and a whole lotta love. This is a space where you can be your whole self: a woman with drive, a mom with purpose, and a human who needs support, connection, and community.

So, thank you for stopping by. I hope you’ll stay for a while—listen to an episode of the podcast, read a blog post or two, and if it feels right, join us as a member. Because you deserve support, and we can’t wait to give it to you.

With light & love,
